The Master’s Program in Indonesian Language Education, Directorate of Postgraduate Programs (DPPs), University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), is located in Malang City, East Java, Indonesia. Strategically situated about eight kilometers from the city’s center with a brisk and exotic topography, it becomes an extra comfortable place for learning. It is proven by the number of students that reach over 30.000 learners nationwide, coming from various regions in Indonesia, making UMM a miniature of Indonesia. Students from numerous other countries also choose UMM as their study destination.
The Master’s Program in Indonesian Language Education is one of the most in-demand programs for domestic and international students in the university. The international students at the Master’s Program in Indonesian Language Education coming from several Asian countries, such as Egypt, Vietnam, Uzbekistan, and Thailand, completed their studies on time. Some of them have become Indonesian language lecturers in their home countries.
Along with the development of global communication technology, the function of the Indonesian language as a communication tool has increasingly escalated to the international level. The Indonesian language is used by the native speakers in Indonesia and by the non-native speakers in Indonesia and abroad. Apart from being studied by the Indonesian students as a compulsory subject, the Indonesian language is also taught in 45 countries globally. It has become a potency and an opportunity for Indonesian language teachers to develop and disseminate the Indonesian language through formal and informal learning. These potency and opportunity then become the considerations to carry out improvements and adjustments to the Master’s Program in Indonesian Language Education curriculum, particularly to meet the needs of Indonesian language teaching for Indonesian and foreign speakers.
The Master’s Program in Indonesian Language Education DPPs UMM strives to improve the implementation of education to meet the society’s changing demands and needs. Along with the rapid development of information technology and the issuance of the new regulations for the higher education implementation, the Master’s Program in Indonesian Language Education has made several adjustments to the curriculum and the learning strategy to equip the students with the required competencies according to the needs and changes of Industry 4.0 society.
